Mortal Kombat 1 Hints at Return of Kombat Kast

With the release of Mortal Kombat 1 only a few months away, it appears players may start getting regular looks into what NetherRealm has in store after hinting Kombat Kast may soon be returning online. The series reboot is already setting up a new world born under the direction of Liu Kang, how different the lives of some of these fighters will be in this new era, and what other tricks the studio has up its sleeves when it comes to gameplay. History has shown a weekly update show is the perfect template to do this for Mortal Kombat, and given the hints on social media, it seems like only a question of when it returns.

Mortal Kombat 1 is the 12th entry in the long-running fighting game series and serves as a second narrative reboot for the universe, following 2011’s Mortal Kombat. The story picks up after the events of Mortal Kombat 11 and the defeat of Kronika, leaving the recently anointed Fire God Liu Kang to shape a new timeline under his direction. Notable regulars such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Johnny Cage are set to return while some will appear as Kameo Fighters, who are selected before the start of a match to assist players during matches.

NetherRealm began hinting at the return of Kombat Kast on Twitter, with some longtime fans of the series asking the official Mortal Kombat account if the show’s comeback was a possibility. While the studio has not provided any details, some posts did receive responses saying that the weekly show is coming back in the very near future. Reddit user Jaimegorevanshared an image of one of these responses, sparking an air of excitement among other users on the platform who want to learn more about the game ahead of its September 2023 release.

Kombat Kast began as an avenue to promote the release of Mortal Kombat X, showing off gameplay and revealing new members of the roster on a consistent basis in the months preceding its April 2015 release. The show continued for several months after, highlighting matches in the community and debuting DLC fighters such as Predator and Jason Voorhees. NetherRealm brought the show back in the lead-up to Mortal Kombat 11‘s 2019 release, once again using it to showcase the game and the characters.

The return of Kombat Kast appears to come at an advantageous time for NetherRealm due to the potential leak of Mortal Kombat 1‘s roster. While there has been no direct confirmation about the leaked roster’s accuracy, players could argue it gives the studio incentive to get out ahead of any further leaks given the game’s title and trailer were leaked shortly before being revealed.

Mortal Kombat 1 is scheduled to release September 19, 2023, for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
