PlayStation has released an announcement trailer for Before Your Eyes, the VR game played by blinking. The trailer for Before Your Eyes comes alongside multiple other announcements and trailers released by PlayStation, including confirmation of Job Simulator and Vacation Simulator for the PS VR2 launch.
The game utilizes blink detection to tell a new kind of narrative, which has been met with high praise, winning multiple awards including a BAFTA. Developed by GoodbyeWorld Games and published by Skybound Games, Before Your Eyes was originally released on PC on April 8, 2021, followed by a port for macOS in September of the same year. Ports for Android and iOS followed in July 2022.
PlayStation owners will soon be able to play the game on the upcoming PS VR2. The hardware is set to release on February 22, and this announcement trailer slates Before Your Eyes to launch just under a month later on March 10. While the trailer doesn’t seem to indicate any gameplay or graphical changes, this will mark the first time for those who only own PlayStation consoles to have access to the title.
Before Your Eyes uses blink detection to tell a unique story in a way that other video games have not had the chance to. While that story has been highly praised, others have found the blink mechanic to be somewhat of a gimmick, and perhaps an uncomfortable one at that. Comments on the trailer’s YouTube page indicate that this title far outshines the concept of being a simple gimmick, with multiple users indicating that it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
While other announced titles won’t necessarily offer such dramatic and emotional experiences, it looks as though players can expect a lot from the PS VR2. While the original PlayStation VR sold very well and was received well critically, the number of games was quite small in comparison to the hardware’s competitors. It appears as though PlayStation is putting a lot more into the future of VR with the launch titles building up, and promise of many other following soon after.
Fans hope that certain PS VR titles will receive a PS VR2 upgrade. While it’s uncertain if these games will ever get the upgrade, it’s good to see that previously unavailable titles such as Before Your Eyes will soon be available. It seems as though fans will be satisfied with the new hardware, assuming the PlayStation VR2 is easier to get a hold of on launch than the PS5 was.
Before Your Eyes is out now for Android, iOS, Mac, and PC and will be available for PS VR2 on March 10.
