World of Warcraft: New Voice Lines Hint at Resolution Between Sylvanas and Tyrande

World of Warcraft’s Patch 9.2, Eternity’s End, has been on the Public Test Realm for over a month now, meaning World of Warcraft dataminers have been pouring through assets to learn what is coming. A recent batch of voice lines contain one that hints at the final confrontation between Tyrande Whisperwind and Sylvanas Windrunner. Warning: Spoilers for the World of Warcraft: Shadowlands expansion below.

Most of the voice lines discovered in this batch involve the Jailer, the unpopular primary antagonist of Shadowlands, spouting his usual fair of villainous doom and gloom, either personally or through the currently-dominated Anduin Wrynn. However, one line delivered by Sylvanas seems to state her intention to submit herself to Tyrande’s judgment.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The conflict between Sylvanas and Tyrande began in Battle for Azeroth when Sylvanas burned Teldrassil, the giant tree many Night Elves called home. Since then, the two women have come into conflict several times, with Sylvanas eventually betraying her allies and joining the enigmatic Jailer, and with Tyrande seeking greater power and hunting her down in literal Hell. Since their last battle, Sylvanas has reclaimed a part of her soul that was evidently taken from her by the Jailer when she was killed by Arthas using the death god’s runeblade way back in Warcraft 3, finally leading to her apparent change of heart.

During an interview with Game Rant, WoW’s Lead Narrative Designer Steve Danuser said players could expect to see a resolution to the ongoing strife between the two characters. The circumstances surrounding their conflict require some heavy interaction, and this voice line seems to hint at one part of what is to come.

I would say those two figures have a lot to – I don’t know if ‘resolve’ is the right word, because can you ever resolve something that happens on the scale of an entire civilization nearly being wiped out? There is going to be some very heavy interaction between those characters, and that is pivotal to the final conclusion of how ‘Eternity’s End’ and the Shadowlands saga wraps up.

Players are understandably apprehensive about the resolution of this particular World of Warcraft story. Some were surprised to see Sylvanas submit herself to judgment, as what we have seen from her previously would suggest she would never do such a thing. However, with the drastic changes she underwent at the end of Chains of Domination with the mending of her shattered soul, it seems Sylvanas is a different character from the one players have seen over the last 20 years.

But therein lies the problem. Long-time Forsaken fans and Sylvanas stans are not happy with the path their Dark Lady is walking. By attributing all of Sylvanas’s previous actions–including the founding of the Forsaken nation itself–to the “evil” part of her soul, the things that made her their favorite character in World of Warcraft have been thrown out.

Likewise, fans of the Night Elves, who suffered the most at Sylvanas’s villainy, expect Tyrande to simply forgive Sylvanas, or at least give her an unsatisfying punishment, since Tyrande’s story has focused on the destructive nature of vengeance. Nevertheless, these datamined voice lines are but one part of the unfolding narrative, and players will have to wait until Eternity’s End launches to know what conclusion awaits these iconic warrior women.
