The last few years have been a rollercoaster for Telltale Games, from the major studio closure in 2018 to the proverbial rebirth of the company later that year under LCG Entertainment. Players got a taste of what the future holds on the game side in 2019 with the re-announcement of The Wolf Among Us 2, but the studio has been silent on the game since. As 2021 comes to a close, Telltale Games is teasing a new update about the game is set to arrive at some point in 2022.
The Wolf Among Us 2 is a sequel to Telltale’s hit 2013 game, The Wolf Among Us, based on Bill Willingham’s Fables comic series. The game follows Bigby Wolf, better known as the Big Bad Wolf, who serves as the sheriff of Fabletown in the 1980s where characters from various fairy tales reside. Wolf is tasked with solving a string of mysterious murders, the first in Fabletown in years, which spirals into a conspiracy involving key figures in the town, and dealing with the consequences of players’ actions during the course of the five-episode series.
After being radio-silent for two years since the announcement, Telltale gave players a taste of when they can learn more about the game in an end of 2021 update post on Twitter. The studio confirmed the game was entering pre-production in December 2019 to coincide with the game’s announcement, giving some context as to why there has been no news about the game. The trend largely continues in the post, but the studio assures players it will be talking more about the game in early 2022.
The lifespan of The Wolf Among Us 2‘s development seemingly mirrors the final days of the original Telltale Games between 2017 and 2018. Telltale first announced the sequel in the summer of 2017 as part of a slate of announcements including more games from its partnerships with Skybound Entertainment and Warner Bros. However, all those games were seemingly dead in the water when the studio shut down in 2018 following nearly two years of restructring and financial problems despite big-name partnerships.
The Wolf Among Us 2 under LCG Entertainment’s Telltale Games was shown at The Game Awards in 2019 to mark the studio’s return, though not as it was before the closure. As mentioned, the studio has been quiet about the game since but appears to be picking up where the old Telltale left off by securing notable partnerships going forward.
Telltale announced the first of these new partnerships at the 2021 Game Awards with its next game, The Expanse. The game will be based primarily on the Amazon Prime TV adaptation of James S.A. Corey’s series of science fiction novels.
