After all these decades, The Legend of Zelda series is still one of the biggest franchises in the industry, with many considering 1998’s Ocarina of Time to be the best entry of all time. As a video game that has influenced open world titles, the original installment has kept Link and the titular Zelda up there as some of the most memorable characters in gaming. As a result, there’s been a remake of the aforementioned Nintendo 64 release, which now comes with a unique feature.
In a recent video uploaded to YouTube, CryZENx, the modder who managed to recreate Ocarina of Time in Unreal Engine 4, has shown something that is not typified for the long-running series. Essentially, this remake now comes with co-op play, meaning that more than one player will be able to jump into this reimagining of a Nintendo classic. In the video description, the creator says that the co-op mode will go from Kokiri Forest up until the players beat Gohma.
Ocarina of Time‘s Kokiri Forest is one of the most well-known locations in this entry, housing the Great Doku Tree as well as Link’s house. Seeing as how Queen Gohma is the first boss that players have to fight, it suggests that the co-op mode that’s been implemented may not be a long segment. Still, the fact that it’s in at all is pretty interesting, especially given that the Legend of Zelda games are not typically known for multiplayer features, sticking traditionally with a single-player experience.
In general, CryZENx, who’s real name is Joseph, has evidently put a lot of work into their reimagining. The Ocarina of Time Unreal Engine 4 remake is pretty stunning, visually. The original is often considered one of the greatest games not just of the Nintendo 64 era, or even of the Zelda games in general, but of all time. It has a 99 rating on Metacritic, showing that it’s just one away from being down as the most perfect video game ever made, topping the website’s list of Best Video Games Of All Time.
It was also part of an important era in video game development. With a lot of video games of the 90s utilizing 3D graphics, Ocarina of Time sits alongside many other classic titles that helped usher in the next phase for gaming. For that reason alone, it’s hardly surprising that it’s so highly regarded, and that people like CryZENx are keen to bring it back to the fore using a more modern engine.
