Twitter Reveals List of Most Discussed Games in 2021

Another year of tweeting is in the books and Twitter reveals which video games were the most discussed in 2021 as well as many other categories.

Twitter is one of the largest places for people to come together and talk about their favorite games. 2021 was another massive year for video games, and as it has done in the past, Twitter has revealed what the most discussed game of the year as well as many other interesting categories.

While Twitter doesn’t have sectioned off communities in the same way that Reddit or Facebook do with their subreddits and groups respectively, finding likeminded people is still pretty easy to do. A simple use of the search bar or glance at what’s trending lets users jump into conversations with millions of other interested individuals. Furthermore, it’s been shown with instances like the fake PlayStation State of Play Event that the trending page on Twitter can be an effective place for communicating on a larger scale. Perhaps the most important aspect of Twitter though is its timeliness, the character limit and ease of posting lending a degree of urgency to the app.

Global Head of Gaming Content Partnerships at Twitter Rishi Chadha has revealed 2021’s most discussed games on Twitter in a new blog post. Looking back at Twitter’s mid-year reveal of the most discussed games, the first four titles are the same, them being Genshin Impact, Apex Legends, Ensemble Stars, and Final Fantasy in that order. As for the remaining six slots, everything has shifted, with Fate/Grand Order climbing up from 9th place to 5th, Minecraft jumping from 10th place to 8th. Animal Crossing, Knives Out, and Fortnite all dropped a place or two, while Monster Hunter totally fell out of the top 10, and Project Sekai coming in at 9th.

Chadha provides some insight about the status of gaming prevailing presence on Twitter. For starters, “there were more than 2.4 BILLION Tweets about gaming, up 14% year over year and a more than 10x increase from 2017,” Chadha writes in the article’s introduction. They go on to emphasize that the fourth quarter of 2021 was the “biggest quarter for gaming conversation ever on Twitter,” which makes sense, considering the litany of big game launches that happened in Fall 2021. It should be noted that the lists do not contain any specific quantifiable data, though the only tweets that counted had to be made from January 1 to December 15, 2021.

It is interesting how the list from halfway through the year to this one really only changed in its bottom portion. The overwhelming popularity of Genshin Impact, Apex Legends, and the rest of those top slots really must be commended considering how quickly the Twitter landscape can change due to the trends. What’s maybe the biggest takeaway, though, is the continued growth of gaming conversation on Twitter compared to past years. If this growth continues, Twitter may become the best place to talk games in no time.
