Triangle Strategy Trailer Focuses on Roland Glenbrook

A new trailer for Square Enix’s upcoming tactics RPG Triangle Strategy delves into the story behind protagonist Roland Glenbrook.

As 2021 wraps up it’s time to start looking toward all of the exciting game releases coming in early 2022. One of the Nintendo Switch’s most exciting exclusives planned for March is the Square Enix tactical RPG Triangle Strategy, headed by the same producer as Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler. Surprisingly, Square Enix hasn’t shared much about Triangle Strategy just, but that seems like it’ll change soon. To start, a new trailer for Triangle Strategy has dropped for one of the game’s three lead protagonists, Roland Glenbrook.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Roland Glenbrook leads Triangle Strategy alongside childhood friend Serenoa Wolffort and Wolffort’s fiance Princess Frederica Aesfrost. Together, the three represent Glenbrook and Aesfrost, two of the three kingdoms at war over the scarcity of salt and iron. The third, Hyzante, is a religious state and the major source of tension in the region. This new trailer focuses in on Roland, detailing his personality and philosophies, the role he has to play in the ongoing war, and the conflict he’s set to face in it all.

Capturing Roland Glenbrook’s character starts by establishing his place in the ongoing political climate of Triangle Strategy‘s setting. Unfortunately, Glenbrook is quite powerless, but is positioned in a place to experience the machinations of key political powers. He’s the second son of the King of Glenbrook, with his elder brother Frani set to inherit the throne. Glenbrook disagrees with both his father and brother’s political inclinations, but as the second son has little recourse for change.

Driven by his convictions, Glenbrook is pushed into a situation where he’ll have to betray the trust of his nation to follow through with his beliefs, or expose illegal dealings and in doing so create strife. Obviously, either path will lead Glenbrook toward conflict. This is a tactical RPG, after all.

The political machinations involved in Triangle Strategy conjure up thoughts of another tactics RPG from generations past. Final Fantasy Tactics also revolved around mature themes, characters in key positions driven to make difficult choices, and close friends whose relationships are tested by war. That’s a lofty comparison to live up to, though.

Triangle Strategy‘s new trailer for Roland Glenbook is clearly just the first of a series of trailers to come over the next weeks. Trailers for both Serenoa Wolffort and Princess Frederica Aesfrost, Triangle Strategy‘s other two main protagonists, are likely certain, but other characters could also be featured. Suffice to say, there’s a lot more information about Triangle Strategy coming soon.

Triangle Strategy releases March 4, 2022, on Switch.
