ToeJam & Earl Teases Limited Run Games Release

Twitter accounts for ToeJam & Earl and Limited Run Games are teasing a physical release for the classic fan-favorite franchise.

The radical rapping alien duo of ToeJam & Earl are set to crash-land in the physical realm. Teased across social media today, ToeJam & Earl is getting a special limited physical release, set to be fully revealed tomorrow.

The iconic alien pair, which fully channel the late 80s/early 90s hip-hop culture they were incepted in, are getting their first fully physically released title in nearly 20 years. The franchise managed to resurrect itself back in 2015 following a successful Kickstarter. ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove was ultimately released in 2019, following several years of delays which saw its release date first pushed back from 2017 to 2018, before finally launching a year later.

Teased on both the Limited Run Games and official ToeJam & Earl Twitter account, a still image shows a sealed present, along with the caption of “Found a present we forgot to open… whoops. Should we open it?” The wrapping paper and background unmistakeably hearken back to the 90s, filled with neon-colored hash marks, squiggles and swirls throughout the image. This post was then reposted by Limited Run Games, suggesting that they wait one more day, essentially confirming a full physical reveal tomorrow.

For gamers who may be unaware, Limited Run Games is a company that specializes in special limited edition physical releases of video games, with an emphasis on retro, indie, and cult-classic titles. Last Year, Limited Run released a limited run of the Castlevania Anniversary Collection. The company offered a plethora of goodies across its various editions, including copies of the soundtrack, posters, artwork, and more. With ToeJam & Earl currently celebrating its 30th anniversary, it stands to reason the game will get a similar treatment.

Being such an era-specific title, Limited Run Games likely has some retro-styled 90s goodies that are sure to be a hit with longtime fans of the franchise. While the physical re-release ToeJam & Earl is bound to come with extra stuff, other recent re-releases are missing major components. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition‘s physical version is being derided by fans for its total lack of a world map, something normally included in anything from Rockstar Games, up through 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2.

Fans just need to wait a bit longer to see everything cooked up for the physical release of the original ToeJam & Earl. For gamers who aren’t sure or ready to invest in such a niche title, they can try it out as part of Nintendo Switch Online’s expansion, which includes other Sega Genesis classics.

ToeJam & Earl is currently available on Sega Genesis, PC, PS3, Wii, and Nintendo Switch Online.
