The Last of Us community has a lot to look forward to over the next few years, with a remake, multiplayer spin-off, and HBO series all in the works. In the meantime, creative fans are keeping busy by making some awesome The Last of Us art, with one player recently sharing their take on the game’s main characters.
The Last of Us fans have recreated Joel and Ellie in many styles over the years. One fan has made Joel and Ellie plush dolls, another has sketched the two characters playing guitar together, and some artists have even painted older versions of Ellie. The love for Joel and Ellie has been made clear time and time again, and with Naughty Dog delivering so much content within The Last of Us universe, the developer has ensured they are never forgotten for long.
The latest Joel and Ellie tribute comes courtesy of Reddit user imjlr3o52_ysj, and it gives the characters an adorable pixel makeover. Obviously, this is a significant change from the models seen in the Naughty Dog games, as the ones seen in The Last of Us Part 1 border on photorealistic. Despite this, the artist managed to provide a surprising amount of detail for both designs, getting their post over 300 upvotes on Reddit.
Both the young version of Ellie and her adult design from are showcased by imjlr3o52_ysj, and some clever touches set the two apart. A furrowed brow and a line under Ellie’s mouth help make her look older, with the increase in height being a less subtle way to show the age increase. Ellie’s hair changes between the two models, with blood present on her pants in the older design – a nice acknowledgement of her revenge-focused journey. Her tattoo can also be made out, as can the shirt pattern and backpack on the younger version.
Just like with Ellie, imjlr3o52_ysj provided some pixelized takes on both versions of Joel. The sequel’s version sports longer hair and a much calmer expression, a good way to display how he softened up in the years between the first and second games. Joel’s green shirt from The Last of Us and brown jacket from The Last of Us 2 both look terrific, with the artist making sure to include details like pockets. As with any good piece of pixel art, a lot of the characters’ key physical features and personality traits are retained.
While it remains to be seen if the pixel artist will make this into a proper series that incorporates other The Last of Us characters like Tommy, there is certainly potential for one. Regardless, they knocked it out of the park with their versions of Joel and Ellie.
The Last of Us Part 1 launches on September 2 for PS5. A PC version is in development.
