Stuntwoman Recreates Sonya Blade Moves from Mortal Kombat 11

A stuntwoman catches the attention of Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon himself in a video recreating Sonya Blade’s moves from Mortal Kombat 11.

Mortal Kombat 11, like all Mortal Kombat titles, is known for its extreme level of blood and gore. This is facilitated by the franchise’s various iconic kombatants like Sonya Blade and her brutal fighting moves. While the majority of fighting game moves are achievable only in the games themselves, one talented stuntwoman is proving otherwise.

The first playable female character in the franchise, Mortal Kombat‘s Sonya Blade is one of the most iconic female video game characters of all time. The special ops fighter has appeared in every major incarnation of the series, and was most recently portrayed by Jessica McNamee in the self-titled Mortal Kombat film. While the movie proved divisive, especially around Sonya Blade’s characterization, a Mortal Kombat film sequel is moving forward.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

While McNamee is expected to reprise her role as Sonya Blade, one fan in particular would make for an excellent stunt double. A stuntwoman called Sofia Stunts has posted a video of herself online recreating a variety of moves and combos from Sonya’s moveset in Mortal Kombat 11. The roughly minute-long video is an astounding display of video game moves being pulled off in real life, with Sofia showing gameplay of the Sonya Blade combos before near-perfectly recreating the moves in real life. The video has received thousands of likes, even getting reposted by Mortal Kombat creator himself, Ed Boon.

The incredibly impressive video helps breathe new life into Mortal Kombat 11 interest, which has waned since receiving its final DLC well over a year ago. The only significant update the game has received this year isn’t something that’s been added, but rather taken away. After three years of its utilization, Mortal Kombat 11 is removing DRM Denuvo, the anti-tampering technology meant to prevent cheating. The controversial software has long been accused of hindering online performance, impacting competitive play.

In addition to Sofia Stunts’ incredible video, another woman wants to step into Sonya Blade’s boots, except this one’s done it before. Sonya Blade’s motion capture artist from Mortal Kombat 3 has stated she wants to be in the games again. In an interview from last year, model Kerri Ann Hoskins has stated she’d like to return to play the fan-favorite character if ever offered the chance. Whenever the next Mortal Kombat title begins development, developer NetherRealm Studios sure does have plenty of options for Sonya.

Said development may actually be happening sooner than later. According to a recent job listing, NetherRealm is hiring for a Senior Combat Designer with a “passion for action and fighting games.” While this could easily be intended for an Injustice sequel or new IP altogether, there’s still a chance a new Mortal Kombat could be on the way.

Mortal Kombat 11 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
