Student Makes Impressive Zelda Animation for Project

One talented fan makes a short film inspired by The Legend of Zelda, featuring characters reminiscent of Link and Zelda from Breath of the Wild.

Fan art based on video games is nothing new, as countless gamers have decided to display their passion for gaming by making artwork based on their favorite characters and worlds. Numerous titles have been represented in these creations, such as The Legend of Zelda and the Pokemon series, just to name a few. While many of this these creations are worthy of praise, one recent piece of art deserves particular attention.

Not long ago, an aspiring animation student revealed a new project that they had completed. Jordan LeBlanc, also known as Hxx on YouTube, decided to make a short film that took inspiration from video games, specifically The Legend of Zelda series. Impressively, the results of this university project were nothing short of spectacular.

In the short film uploaded to YouTube titled “Shield Bash,” a character with a similar appearance to Link from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild walks past the camera and notices a shield hanging from a wall in what appears to be some sort of library. Just as he is about to grab the item, he realizes that another character, one that looks like Zelda, wants it as well. Chaos ensues as the two attempt to take the shield from each other using a sword and a bow.

In addition to showcasing the incredible animation on YouTube, Hxx provided some details behind the process of bringing the short film to life. According to the creator, the project was their sophomore film for the university they attended. In addition, they noted that the short film was their first complete personal project using the computer graphics application called Maya. While they directed and animated the film, they had help from several other talented individuals, including Christoph Schoch, who provided the assets, and Jeffrey Brice, who composed the music. Fortunately, Hxx revealed that the project netted them an A in the class.

Impressively, this is not the first time that Hxx has shown off their animation skills on YouTube. For those interested in seeing more, the artist has many more short films on their channel, including a popular one based on the battle royale game Apex Legends. While those past projects are doubtlessly impressive, many longtime fans commented that the artist’s skills as an animator have continued to improve over the years.

While this new animation based on The Legend of Zelda series is exciting for many fans, it likely makes the wait for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 feel even longer. Since the sequel to 2017’s Breath of the Wild was revealed, gamers have been wanting to see more of the gameplay. Unfortunately, the game was recently delayed until 2023, meaning that the wait will continue for a while longer. At least fans have creations like this Zelda animation from Hxx to check out in the meantime.
