As expected, Starfield was a major component to Microsoft’s recent June showcase, capping off a show already packed with trailers, news, and gameplay. While the Starfield delay no doubt still stings, fans were at least given tons of new details to hopefully tide them over. In fact, Todd Howard confirmed the game is likely much bigger than most people likely believed with a longer main quest, the ability to create bases and spaceships as well as being able to fly to different galaxies and planets.
Fans also saw actual gameplay from the ambitious title, including combat against a space pirates faction, walking through various settlements, as well as interacting with NPC characters. What fans noticed right away is the overall improvement to facial animations in Starfield versus some of Bethesda’s older RPG titles. This includes small details like animated skin folds, facial animations, and skin wrinkles, which are now more defined and makes the characters look more believable. The gameplay trailers also showed a variety of characters, including one in particular which the community has seemingly discovered a new detail about.
One aspect that wasn’t revealed were the names of many of the NPCs players will come across, some of them likely being fairly important to the game’s overall story. As seen in the most recent trailer as well as a screenshot revealing that the player’s Starfield character won’t have a voice, a person wearing a spacesuit can be seen. While the trailer doesn’t confirm any details about this individual, for those who used the Alt Text feature on the Tweeted out screenshot, they discovered that the person’s name is actually Barrett.
The trailer has Barrett seemingly asking the player if they had dug up an item called The Relic and the visions that seemingly result from it. Without much more to go on, the community has tried to fill in the gaps, with many agreeing that Barrett is likely going to be more of a Starfield introductory character perhaps doling out fetch quests or initial details of the main quest, with some joking that he’ll likely be killed off in the first 30 minutes of the game. With a name like Barrett, many have also jokingly started asking if he has a gun arm, in a clear reference to Final Fantasy 7‘s Barret Wallace.
In addition to improved character animations, Bethesda has also made sure to expand other areas of the game as well such as the cities and towns players will come across. The game’s capital city, New Atlantis, is the biggest city Bethesda has ever created and is full of people, missions, events, and other things to check out.
Starfield is scheduled to release in early 2023 on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
