Sonic Frontiers Commercial Shows New Areas, Snippet of Vocal Song, and Sage Dialogue

A new commercial for Sonic Frontiers shows off new areas of Starfall Islands, a bit of a vocal song, and dialogue from the character Sage.

For many, Sonic Frontiers is one of the most anticipated games of the year, with fans seeing a lot of potential in an open-world Sonic the Hedgehog game. Many have made the comparison of how going from linear stages to an open-zone is similar to Nintendo’s own shift for Breath of the Wild, and the similarities are evident through the usage of combat, puzzles, and a mysterious world with a melancholic atmosphere. Fans got plenty of details about Sonic Frontiers all throughout June, which ended with a trailer during a third-party Nintendo Direct.

The next showcase of Sonic Frontiers will be at Gamescom, where fans hope that more about the game’s mechanics or release date will be revealed. The event will be streamed live on Tuesday, August 23, though fans have already gotten some information about the game from other sources, such as a Japanese commercial that highlights some exciting features.

This commercial was first shown off before the Japanese theatrical premiere of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which aired on Japanese Television earlier this week. It shows Sonic running through the game’s overworld, with quick showcases of different areas that can be found in the game. Aside from the big grassy field that fans have seen beforehand, Sonic can explore a variety of areas with varying weather patterns and day-night cycles. One particular shot that shows Sonic running with the sun setting has proven to be quite popular with fans.

Alongside this gameplay, dialogue can be heard from one of the characters from Sonic Frontiers, Sage, a mysterious young girl who is speculated to be an AI and tied to the Cyberspace portion of the game. She asks Sonic why he continues to fight, especially against the robotic monsters that can be found in the overworld. The text on screen is speculated to be Sonic’s answer, where he states that he runs to “get that feeling.” This continues to give fans questions about Sage and her motivations, with some unclear whether she is a villainous antagonist or if she’s trying to help Sonic and his friends.

The other big detail that fans noticed in this commercial is the snippet of a vocal song near the end of the video. Many have noted that the song is similar to the one as the one used near the end of Sonic Frontiers‘ Nintendo Direct trailer, this time with lyrics. Speculation has arisen for who is singing in this portion, with some guessing it’s Vic Fuentes from American rock band Pierce the Veil, based on the similar sounding vocals.

Sonic Frontiers is scheduled to release holiday 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
