A PlayStation Plus subscription is required for one to really get the most out of their PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles. Without a PlayStation Plus subscription, PS4 and PS5 gamers are unable to play games online or claim the free PS Plus games every month. To spread the holiday cheer, it seems Sony has given some PS Plus users who have subscriptions expiring soon a surprise extension so they can use the service a bit longer.
This was pointed out by Reddit user Sikayduh, who received a 10 day extension on their PS Plus subscription that was originally scheduled to expire on December 25. The accompanying email said “Happy holidays” and added that PlayStation wants users to “have a fun-filled holiday season.” It’s unclear how many of these PlayStation Plus subscription extensions were sent out by Sony, but it seems as though they were limited to users whose subscriptions were close to expiring around the holidays.
If someone lets their PlayStation Plus subscription expire, they lose out on more than just being able to play games online. Maintaining a PS Plus subscription is necessary to keep access to any of the free games that one’s claimed. So if someone claimed the free PS Plus games for December 2021 and let their subscription run out, they would no longer be able to access those games unless they purchased them or renewed their subscription.
Considering this, and the fact that PS Plus is required to play most PlayStation multiplayer games online, it is a nice gesture from Sony to extend some users’ subscriptions. In the meantime, those who are interested in extending their subscriptions further by renewing it should know that there are multiple times a year when a 12 month PS Plus subscription is available at a heavily discounted price.
For example, the PlayStation Black Friday deals usually include a discount on a 12-month PS Plus subscription, and there are other occasions when the subscription is sold at half off. It’s also worth pointing out that PS Plus subscriptions stack, so even if someone’s subscription isn’t due to expire anytime soon, they can still take advantage of the discounts and extend their subscription.
Right now might be the best time to renew one’s PS Plus subscription, if the rumors about the free PS Plus games for January 2022 are accurate. While the free PS Plus games for January 2022 have yet to be confirmed, reliable leakers have suggested that the lineup will include Persona 5 Strikers as well as the sleeper hit Deep Rock Galactic and racing game Dirt 5. If the rumors are true, it looks like Sony is hoping to start 2022 off with a bang for PS Plus subscribers.
