Rumor: Nvidia May Announce RTX 3080 12 GB Tomorrow

Nvidia is generally considered the king of the GPU world, with new products being announced all the time, and it looks as though another is inbound.

Pretty soon, the graphics card world will have three manufacturers for PC enthusiasts and gamers to choose from. While Nvidia and AMD have been in the industry for some time now, Intel is the newcomer to this particular bout, with the Arc Alchemist GPU expected sometime this year, adding more choice for consumers. However, “team green” is probably going to want to keep its title as one of the leading companies when it comes to this market, so it’s been announcing a slew of new products recently, and it looks as though there may be another announcement on the way very soon.

According to a rumor from Videocardz, it’s entirely possible that Nvidia may be about to announce the RTX 3080 12 GB tomorrow. This latest declaration, if true, will be to discuss the launch of the slightly beefed up version of the 3080 series as part of a refresh of this model. As the name suggests, this variation will have 12 GB of memory as opposed to 10 GB on the original released in September 2020.

Nvidia postponed the release of the RTX 3080 12 GB, along with the 3070 Ti 16 GB, a few weeks ago. While it’s not certain why the company had to push the release dates back for these products, many will likely speculate that it’s down to the ongoing tech deficit. With semiconductors in short supply, and expected to continue for a good while longer, the sight of so many GPUs, from AMD and Intel as well as Nvidia, may feel a little pointless to some if procuring any of it is going to be difficult.

On top of that, Nvidia also announced the RTX 3090 Ti, an improved version of the 3090 which is generally regarded as one of the most powerful graphics cards in the current market. With 24 GB of GDDR6X VRAM and 10,752 CUDA cores, it will certainly outshine the 3080 12 GB, which is still an improvement on the original card it’s built from, sporting 8,960 cores and 912 GB/s bandwidth.

Of course, it needs to be stated at this point that tomorrow’s announcement is just a rumor. If Nvidia does go ahead and bring up news about the RTX 30800 12 GB, it will likely be about when it will hit shelves. With Intel looking to usher in a ‘new era’ of GPU tech, Jensen Huang and co are no doubt wanting to quash the competition and remain the top dog of the graphics card world.
