Ubisoft’s long-awaited roller derby-inspired title Roller Champions is finally gearing up for a full release. In anticipation of the free-to-play game’s launch, the publisher has released an extensive trailer detailing Roller Champions‘ various gameplay mechanics, rules, modes, and more.
The highly-anticipated title has been plagued with numerous delays due to developers continuously needing more time to polish the game’s various features. After an initial delay announcement in September of 2020, Roller Champions was delayed yet again in March 2022. However, with the release of the trailer, players shouldn’t have to wait too much longer until they can get their hands on it.
The Roller Champions gameplay overview trailer details everything players will need to know in order to get started. First, the rules of the game are explained, with players needing to pass through four gates to activate the overhead goals, which can yield more points if multiple laps are completed. There are a variety of moves to jockey for ball possession, including tackling, dodging, passing, which can be chained together in combos. Various modes are then detailed, including casual Quick Matches, Custom Matches, and competitive Ranked Matches. Limited Time Modes will also be available, changing up elements to the game’s formula.
Roller Champions also includes an array of cosmetics for players to customize their character, including outfits, titles, and banners. The trailer also touts “countless” emotes for players to express themselves, and a variety of different goal effects, taking a page out of Rocket League‘s book. The trailer concludes with the specific release date of May 25, revealing the long-developed title is mere days away from launch. The announcement ends a nearly three-year waiting period, as Roller Champions first launched its demo back in June 2019, with an initially planned launch of early 2020.
Although Roller Champions has taken the company several years longer than first stated to develop, Ubisoft plans to release three major new games by March 2023. Switch exclusive Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope is slated to launch by the end of 2022, as is Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, which could coincide with the release of the franchise’s long-awaited film sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water. With the delay of Triple-A titles becoming an increasingly common occurrence, fans are hoping Ubisoft’s upcoming titles can hit their announced launch targets.
While Roller Champions appears to have the makings of another free-to-play hit, it isn’t the only one fully launching soon. After just short of two years of exclusivity, the wildly popular Fall Guys is finally coming to Xbox and Switch, launching on June 23, just a few weeks after Roller Champions.
Roller Champions launches May 25 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, with Switch, Stadia, and Luna releases at a later date.
