Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Surpass Pokemon Sword and Shield Sales Milestone

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet cross a critical sales milestone two months after their release, surpassing their predecessors Pokemon Sword and Shield.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have crossed an important sales milestone, selling more units in eight weeks than Pokemon Sword and Shield did in three years. The popularity of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is as strong as ever and could turn these games into some of the best-selling titles in the series.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are the latest entries in the Pokemon series, taking the franchise to the Spain-inspired region of Paldea. On top of adding 103 new Pokemon for trainers to capture, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet feature an open-world setting and three different stories filled with their own quests. These titles also bring their share of new features, from auto battles to the Terastal phenomenon and co-op for up to four players.

Japanese game sales database Game Data Library shared a graph showing the total retail sales of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet in Japan. In eight weeks, the latest Pokemon games sold more units than their predecessors, Sword and Shield, in three years. Since their release in November 2022, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have sold over 6 million copies in Japan, including both physical and digital sales.

Upon their release, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet achieved the biggest game launch in Japan, selling over four million units in less than a week. In three days, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet surpassed the lifetime sales of Pokemon Legends: Arceus, the semi-open world game set before the events of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. Eight weeks after their original release, the sales of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are still going strong, turning this new opus into one of the fastest-selling games in Japan. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet sold more units in eight weeks than Pokemon Black and White, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Pokemon Gold and Silver did in the same time frame.

Despite their popularity and incredible sales numbers, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet suffer from various technical issues. Players have shared clips showing their character clipping into a cave wall, NPCs vanishing into a staircase, or creatures appearing distorted. A glitch even prevented Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players from completing gym challenges, which are one of the main goals of these games.

Nintendo and Game Freak announced an upcoming patch to fix most of the bugs plaguing the user experience. Update 1.2 for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will address technical issues and add new functionality, with no further details as to what it entails. This new patch will be available for all players in late February, with more information about its contents hopefully coming out before this date.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available now on Nintendo Switch.
