There’s a new PlayStation fighting game coming in the new year that has stirred the attention of a portion of the community that’s been sharing its reaction to a recent reveal. Phantom Breaker: Omnia‘s release date trailer showed of its roster of characters through intense combat with a glimpse into its storytelling and an unforgettable announcer.
MAGE-X and Gameloop Inc have officially confirmed the mid-March release date for Phantom Breaker: Omnia during a lengthy trailer. The video shared on PlayStation’s YouTube channel confirmed a roster of twenty characters with their own fighting styles, a special offensive power called Overdrive that will increase a player’s chances of surviving, and Ultimate Attacks which each feature unique animations built around the character unleashing it. The release date trailer also showed that the game will delve into each character’s story to give players an idea of why they’re fighting in Story Mode.
The original Phantom Breaker was released on the Xbox 360 back in 2011, but it isn’t offered through Xbox Series X/S backward compatibility so several fans of the title have been anticipating a new entry in the series since its last release. Phantom Breaker: Omnia looks to be an upgrade on the 2D fighting formula already established by the original, with a roster of characters mostly compiled from the first game as well as its Enhanced Edition which was released later. The video teased two missing characters that may be unlocked later through gameplay, while the roster of characters is likely to expand through DLC if the title is successful.
One of the reasons that Phantom Breaker: Omnia may find further success than its predecessor is the PlayStation YouTube community’s positive response to the recent trailer. Although a portion of PlayStation fans responding to the gameplay trailer have been anticipating this title since the last installment in the series released, a large chunk of fan reaction was to the ridiculous announcing in the video. Throughout the video, the announcer hypes up each feature with expressive voice lines that flow seamlessly from gameplay feature announcements to self-aware quips on the combat.
“This announcer better be in the game. I will pay money for it,” said one of the top responses to Phantom Breaker: Omnia‘s recent trailer. Another PlayStation fan stated that the announcer deserves a raise regardless of his pay, and another contemplated how much fun the announcer had in providing their voice for the trailer. Although Phantom Breaker: Omnia shares several similarities with its predecessor and other anime 2D fighting titles such as BlazBlue and Guilty Gear, this announcer may bring an influx of fans to Omnia.
Between the feature reveals, the Phantom Breaker: Omnia release date trailer’s announcer yelled things like “Oh yeah!” “No way!” and “Bada-bing bada-boom!” The voice-over was reminiscent of classic fighting games such as Killer Instinct and some entries in The King of Fighters series, while fans of the 2D anime aesthetics may see similarities between the announcer and various anime characters. It’s currently unclear whether or not the Phantom Breaker: Omnia release date trailer announcer will also be commentating fights in the game, but many PlayStation fans are hoping that’s the case.
Phantom Breaker: Omnia releases for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One on March 15, 2022.
