The Christmas season is a time for gift-giving, and that also extends to online gaming retailers, with The Epic Game Store giving away a free game every day. GOG is also offering up a free game of its own, though the title itself is an unusual choice for the holiday season.
Gamers can pick up the psychological horror adventure game I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream for free from Good Old Games until December 25th. The only price is that players will need to sign up for GOG’s email list and find a way to maintain their holiday spirit while playing the rather grim, post-apocalyptic title.
I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream is a point-and-click adventure game developed by Cyberdreams Interactive and released in 1995. It was inspired by Harlan Ellison’s 1968 post-apocalyptic short story of the same name, with Ellison himself writing a script treatment for the game. It takes place in a world destroyed by nuclear war, where the last surviving humans are imprisoned and tortured by a psychotic artificial intelligence.
The 1995 adventure game isn’t quite so grim. Its multiple endings even give players the chance to escape and rebuild humanity. However, I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream still retains the original story’s dark and violent tone. While many consider it one of the best point-and-click adventure games of all time, it’s not exactly a game to put someone in the spirit of the holiday season. Players might want to consider picking it up for free now, then waiting a few days before giving it a try.
On the other hand, PC gamers who want to get into the spirit of giving can pick up The Video Game History Foundation Support Pack from GOG. The pack includes legendary RPG Darklands and classic turn-based strategy game Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate. Set in 14th century Germany, Darklands sees players lead a team of four adventures through a world of mythical beasts, renegade knights, and religious fanatics. Meanwhile, Warhammer 40K: Chaos Gate puts players in control of an army of Ultramarines tasked to recover a lost artifact stolen by the forces of Chaos.
The two-game bundle is $6 on Good Old Games, with all proceeds going to the Video Game History Foundation. The VGHF works to preserve games and game-related materials. This includes everything from source code and developer notes to ads and magazines. Supporting the organization also seems like an excellent way to resurrect one’s holiday spirit after playing this year’s free game.
I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream is available on PC, Android, and iOS.
