Overwatch Reveals Lunar New Year Skins for Tracer and Mercy

Players receive a glimpse at new skins for Mercy and Tracer coming in the Lunar New Year event for Overwatch, known as Year of the Tiger.

It is often exciting when new seasonal events come around for Overwatch, as they bring a bunch of new themed cosmetics for various characters in the game. Over the years, Activision Blizzard has had numerous in-game events, such as Winter Wonderland and Halloween Terror. Recently, fans learned several details about the latest edition of the Lunar New Year seasonal event scheduled to come to the game.

In a pair of tweets from January 24, Activision Blizzard revealed that fan favorites Tracer and Mercy were both getting themed outfits to celebrate the Year of the Tiger, the latest Lunar New Year limited-time event for Overwatch. According to the post, these new skins will be available for purchase when the festivities kick off on January 25. They will continue to be purchasable until the event ends on February 15.

The first of these skins is the Nezha Tracer skin. A Legendary cosmetic, the teleporting heroine sports a light green outfit and has her hair pulled back into 2 separate buns. In addition, the skin features a fire aesthetic, as bright orange flames are visible on the arms and near the ankles of the outfit. Finishing off the festive look, she even has flaming shoes.

The other new skin revealed on Twitter was the Seolbim Mercy skin. While Mercy has no shortage of Legendary skins already featured in Overwatch, this skin makes a strong showing nonetheless. It features a predominantly white and powder blue color palette with some accents of pink. Her signature wings also get a makeover as they now include a stunning blue and pink color scheme. In addition, what appears to be some type of bird carving is added to the top of each wing. This design is complemented by a new white and pink look for her staff as well.

Since revealing these upcoming skins on social media, many members of the Overwatch community have weighed, with many enjoying the new looks for the characters. Among those that offered an opinion was an Overwatch insider known as Naeri. They tweeted some information about the inspiration behind the designs. According to the Twitter user, the Mercy Legendary skin was based on Hanbok, a type of Korean clothing. “Hanbok has elegance and beauty,” they said. In addition, Naeri noted that the new Tracer skin was inspired by the Nezha, notable in Chinese culture. “Nezha is a protection deity in Chinese folk religion,” they pointed out.

These new skins are doubtlessly exciting to many fans of Tracer and Mercy. It will be interesting to see what other cosmetics are revealed for Year of the Tiger when it goes live in Overwatch on January 25.

Overwatch is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
