One of 2022’s Best Horror Movies is Getting a Video Game Adaptation

Highlights

  • A video game adaptation of the horror film Barbarian is being worked on by New Regency Pictures and Diversion3 Entertainment, expanding on the universe and themes of the movie.
  • The details of the video game adaptation, such as plot, gameplay, characters, and settings, have not been revealed yet, but fans can anticipate an expansion of the Barbarian world for PC and consoles.
  • The developer Diversion3 Entertainment has previously worked on horror games like Friday the 13th: The Game and Evil Dead: The Game, so there is speculation that the Barbarian game could have an asymmetrical approach, with killers and survivors. The release window for the game is currently unknown.

A video game adaptation of Zach Cregger’s 2022 horror hit Barbarian is currently in the works by New Regency Pictures and Diversion3 Entertainment. The upcoming horror title will expand on the film’s universe and themes.

Barbarian comes from writer and director Zach Cregger, whose solo directorial debut attained $45.4 million at the box office on a $4-4.5 million budget. The film was a success, garnering praise for its horrifying elements, story, and cast, which includes Georgina Campbell, Justin Long, and Bill Skarsgård. With a runtime of 102 minutes, audiences were introduced to the unnerving concept of a double-booked Airbnb scenario that unfolds into a horror show. While Barbarian may have centered a singular horror-thriller experience, a new video game adaptation aims to broaden its horizons.

The haunting Airbnb from Barbarian won’t be the only horror show for fans of the film to witness. According to Bloody Disgusting, New Regency Pictures and Diversion3 Entertainment are creating a new video game adaptation that takes on the horror film. Details are scarce in terms of plot, gameplay, characters, and settings, yet players can expect the world of Barbarian to be expanded upon for PC and consoles. “We look forward to exploring these themes further in the game,” says Tim Hesse, Executive Producer of Diversion3 Entertainment. Whether this means that it will be a sequel, prequel, or a spin-off remains to be seen.

While Barbarian fans aren’t being given much context to rely on, they can look at the history of developer Diversion3 Entertainment’s projects for some reference. The company previously worked on the asymmetrical multiplayer horror games Friday the 13th: The Game and Evil Dead: The Game. Similar to Dead by Daylight, the games feature horror film and gaming icons that players can control. When it comes to the world of Barbarian, there’s a possibility that the game will also take an asymettrical approach, though this is purely speculation. If it does happen, killers could control The Mother while survivors control the victims from the film or original characters. For now, players will just have to wait and see what New Regency Pictures and Diversion3 Entertainment have in store for them, as virtually nothing about the game is known.

Barbarian is yet another horror film to receive the video game adaptation treatment. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was released recently, and it continues the trend of developers translating horror movie experiences into a gaming form. With Barbarian now coming out with its own adaptation, fans of the film can expect more scares and surprises, but it is unclear when those will be delivered since there is no release window for the Barbarian game yet.

Barbarian is currently in development.
