Of Course Shrek Has Been Added to the Resident Evil 4 Demo

Even before the remake of Resident Evil 4 has fully launched, someone has taken the demo and added in everyone’s favorite ogre, Shrek. While the first entry in Capcom’s long-running horror series is largely considered one of the scariest games of all time, that doesn’t mean fans can’t have a little fun with the format. Even the darkest and most violent releases are not safe from the modding community.

When it was released not long ago, it didn’t take long for people to start modding the Resident Evil 4 demo. One recent example makes this trial ever-lasting by stripping away the time and kill limits, effectively allowing players to keep shooting at villagers for as long as they can last. Despite the demo being quite short, people are evidently keen to get as much as they can out of it, and that sometimes involves a little superficial tweaking.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

As spotted by Destructoid, Nexus Mods user Iven has given the horror community what it most wants: Shrek inside the Resident Evil 4 demo. Replacing Dr. Salvador, also known as the Chainsaw Man, Shrek poses a much bigger threat than fans are used to seeing in the animated star’s films. A video shows the player going through the demo, where all seems normal, until partway through when they encounter the chainsaw-wielding green beast. What’s quite creepy about this footage is how blank Shrek’s expression is as he lunges at Leon and attempts to decapitate him.

The Chainsaw Man is easily one of the most infamous enemies in the original Resident Evil 4, partly because he turns up right at the start of the game. Where players would ordinarily expect to be eased into a story, even a horror one, RE4 takes a leaf out of the second and third entries in the series by throwing a lot at them before they’ve even gotten used to the controls. To see the terrifying enemy take on the form of an otherwise friendly character is equal parts amusing and eerie.

It’s also not surprising to see DreamWorks’ green-skinned and Scottish-voiced protagonist make an appearance in the gaming world. Shrek’s presence in Fallout 4 was almost seamless, with the ogre cracking wise at some of the post-apocalyptic RPG’s most well-known characters. Him taking over for Salvador is a little jarring given the context, but it just goes to show how quickly the modding community can get to work, even on a demo.

Resident Evil 4 Remake is set to release on March 24, 2023, for PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
