Oblivion Mod Adds Minecraft-Style Fishing to The Game

Fishing has been a rather pleasant pastime in gaming for years, and one fan takes Minecraft’s version and puts it into The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion.

Video games are not always about violence and action. Sometimes they can be about living a tranquil alternative life, and one way to achieve this is through a simple fishing mini-game. The likes of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim now includes fishing, and many fans are finding themselves swapping out their claymores for their rods. With that in mind, it’s not surprising that someone has added the ability to fish to Oblivion, though this version takes some inspiration from Minecraft.

Uploading the file to Nexusmods recently, user efhunter has created a fishing add-on for The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, which takes cues from Mojang’s open-world sandbox game. What’s most impressive about this mod is that it’s also fully voiced, thanks to dialogue generated by AI using the xVASynth software. An accompanying video shows efhunter’s mod in action, with the player entering the Flowing Bowl in Anvil, where the proprietor offers up a range of rods, as well as a set of instructions on fishing in the region. It’s all quite impressive for that extra bit of immersion.

The way that it takes cues from the fishing mechanics in Minecraft, according to the description page on Nexusmods, is that when players launch the “bobber” into the water, they will need to watch out for a big splash indicating that a fish has latched on. Once they reel it in, the game will indicate that a fish has been caught. It seems as though it’s possible to catch nearly every fish in Oblivion, including some from other mods. For anyone looking for that peaceful life in Cyrodiil, this could offer up an alternative to battling it out with creatures or going on dangerous quests.

Oblivion is easily one of the best Elder Scrolls games around. True, it has aged quite a bit due to it now being 16 years old, but the fact that people are still making mods for it shows that it’s beloved by many, even after more than a decade and a half.

The game is still influential to this day. Apparently, Bethesda’s Starfield may be taking notes from Oblivion, particularly when it comes to the dialogue persuasion feature. After all these years, fans and seemingly the developer itself have not forgotten this role-playing gem. It looks dated in this modern gaming era, but it’s an absolute classic in the series. Efhunter’s fishing mod, though not the first of its kind, shows there is so much more life left in the game.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is available on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
