While Mortal Kombat 1 is giving the universe’s narrative a fresh start, the game’s Kameo fighters continue to lean into nostalgia with the reveal of Sektor’s fatality during the latest Kombat Kast. The roster of Kameo Fighters is already set to be as diverse as the game’s main playable roster by featuring throwback versions of characters like Scorpion and Sonya Blade while also highlighting more obscure characters such as Darrius and Sareena. Sektor is one character who falls into the former category, and his fatality does as well, with the studio going back to the character’s very first appearance in the franchise for it.
Mortal Kombat 1 will serve as a narrative reboot to the series following Liu Kang’s rise to godhood and Kronika’s subsequent defeat in Mortal Kombat 11. The new timeline constructed under the Fire God’s watch saw a prolonged peace not seen in the previous era, though not without some dramatic changes to other characters’ histories, such as Scorpion and Sub-Zero now being brothers. Despite Liu Kang’s best efforts, though, a mysterious new threat is growing that could once again see the realms thrown back into the deadly cycle of combat that consumed the original timeline.
While the narrative appears to be all about what’s new, the Kameo fighters lean into the franchise’s 30-year history between the retro character designs and classic fatalities. NetherRealm continued to reinforce this during the latest Kombat Kast, which closed out the stream’s final portion of gameplay by showcasing Sektor’s fatality. Series veterans will recognize this as the character’s original fatality from Mortal Kombat 3, where the Lin Kuei android made his franchise debut.
As of this writing, the other Kameo fighters NetherRealm has shown off the fatalities for include Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, Kano, and Jax. The fighters, like Sektor, all use killing blows taken directly from Mortal Kombat‘s early days, with all the characters from the original 1992 game sporting fatalities taken from said game. While Jax made his debut in Mortal Kombat 2, and his Kameo design appears to be taken from it, NetherRealm instead took his fatality from Mortal Kombat 3.
In addition, NetherRealm isn’t short on choices for Kameo fighters to showcase in future streams or trailers, as 13 of the 16 launch Kameo roster members are known as of this writing. Sareena, who made her series debut in 1997’s Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, was revealed as part of the Kameo roster alongside the main roster reveals of Reptile, Ashrah, and Havik. With three spots remaining, players can only speculate if NetherRealm will dive deeper into franchise history to fill out the Kameo roster.
Mortal Kombat 1 is scheduled to release September 19, 2023, for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
