Marvel’s Avengers Releasing A Free New Thor Skin Before Delisting

Marvel’s Avengers is releasing yet another free character skin before its delisting later this year, this time for the legendary Thor. After its team-focused superhero action title struggled to connect with players over the past two years, developer Crystal Dynamics announced that Marvel’s Avengers would end all post-launch support and be delisted from all online retailers later this year. As a consolation to fans who have already invested in the game, all cosmetic items will be made available completely free of charge, and the Marvel’s Avengers servers will remain online for the foreseeable future.

The final update patch for Marvel’s Avengers will launch on March 31, and it will turn off the cosmetic Marketplace and convert all Credit balances into other in-game resources in preparation for the final delisting. Additionally, players will be able to unlock a free Iron Man skin that bears a striking resemblance to his fellow Avenger War Machine – as long as they have earned at least one achievement or trophy before April 1. As it turns out, another hero will be getting a new look as part of the final wave of new Marvel’s Avengers content, one that comes from the dawn of time.

Earlier this week, the official Marvel’s Avengers Twitter account announced that a new Thor skin will be made available to all players free of charge when Update 2.8 goes live on March 31. Dubbed the “1,000,000 B.C. Outfit,” this ancient uniform was worn by Thor’s father Odin in the pages of last year’s Avengers 1,000,000 BC – which featured a prehistoric team of Avengers chosen by the Phoenix Force to battle the Dark Celestial Zgreb the Aspirant during the early days of humanity.

As mentioned before, this final free character skin will be a bittersweet consolation for fans of Marvel’s Avengers. Despite initial excitement at the idea of controlling Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in a team-based action adventure, players quickly soured on Marvel’s Avengers due to its controversial live-service model among other issues large and small. Even Marvel’s Avengers support developers have apologized for the game’s troubled production, which served as an unfortunate omen of the game’s troubled shelf life and eventual delisting.

Not all of the previously leaked and promised Marvel’s Avengers content will be released before the game ends in September, but at least fans will be able to unlock free skins for Thor and Iron Man as part of Marvel’s Avengers’ final update later this week. While Odin’s appearance in Avengers 1,000,000 BC marked the genesis of Marvel’s flagship superhero team, his designated Marvel’s Avengers costume will ironically herald the end of a long-troubled comic-based title.

Marvel’s Avengers is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
