LEGO Racing Game Reportedly in Closed Beta, Images Leak Online

A new LEGO racing game called LEGO 2K Drive, though unannounced, is rumored to currently be in the closed beta testing phase. This info comes just over a year after it was rumored that 2K Games had partnered with LEGO to make sports and racing games. The racing title at the time was said to not be a racer like Mario Kart, but would instead take place in an open world.

Speculation began when a job listing was spotted for a producer role at Visual Concepts, a subsidiary of 2K Games. The description stated that, specifically, the studio was working on “an open-world driving game with a major license.” It was also believed that a soccer title was in the works or would be soon. Nothing was ever confirmed by 2K or LEGO, and since then, the two companies have continued on with other projects. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga launched in April 2022, and WWE 2K23 released to primarily positive reviews on March 17.

Speculation flared again recently when XboxEra’s Shpeshal_Nick mentioned that he’d learned the name of this rumored collaboration racing game was LEGO 2K Drive. Soon after, there was word that the game had begun a closed beta test, with numerous screenshots leaking online. From these images, it appears to be a fairly standard racing title, with regular races and a cup series, as well as a shared world that lets gamers play with friends.

If previous rumors about LEGO 2K Drive being an open-world racing game are accurate, it’s not clear from the screenshots how precisely that’s been implemented. A number of the maps have been revealed, however, and show a variety of locations. There are the somewhat standard desert and mountain settings, as well as maps called “Cat Scratch Freeway” with giant balls of yarn and “Glazed Overdrive” with players racing in what appear to be coffee cups as donuts float in the sky. And the map “Headless Horsepower” seems to be going for a more spooky vibe.

Even though the leaked images of LEGO 2K Drive lend a lot of believability to the rumors about the game’s development, it’s always a good idea to take anything with a pinch of salt until an official announcement. If the title is actually in closed beta, it shouldn’t be long before publisher 2K Games sees fit to share more info with fans.

It’s been more than 20 years since LEGO Drome Racers and LEGO Racers 2 were released, so LEGO 2K Drive might be just what’s needed to satiate gamers’ desire for another LEGO racing game. A number of other interesting projects could come from a 2K and LEGO video game partnership, such as a LEGO WWE or NBA title, or maybe even a revival of former franchises like MLB and NHL.
