Layers of Fears Trailer Revealed at Gamescom

Layers of Fears is the next entry in Bloober Team’s dark psychological horror series, and the upcoming game has its first gameplay trailer revealed.

For those who are into all things spooky when it comes to gaming, there’s been a lot on display lately. Gamescom 2022 has revealed a number of horror games, including new trailers for The Outlast Trials, The Callisto Protocol, and the announcement of both Dead Island 2 and Dying Light 2‘s first major story DLC “Bloody Ties.” On top of all this, Bloober Team’s upcoming title Layers of Fears has also been given some screen time at Gamescom’s Future Games Show, with its first gameplay trailer being shown off.

The next entry in the studio’s darkly psychological series, Layers of Fears will build off the previous two installments and will have a new story with all the themes of madness and near-psychedelic first-person horror fans have come to expect. The trailer has a brooding atmosphere, with the voice of a soft-spoken woman talking about a piano, which sets the tone. There are also brief moments that show the actual gameplay itself, with that “haunted house” vibe that many will already be familiar with. Those who enjoy the work of Bloober will no doubt be excited for this next installment.

The developer announced Layers of Fears at Summer Game Fest a couple of months ago, with this new game being made in Unreal Engine 5. There had been rumors in the past that the team was getting ready to reveal something, with an image posted to Twitter that teased the studio’s next project. Given that this image depicted a heavily scratched painting of a face, a lot of fans most likely assumed it was going to be a new Layers of Fear game. Currently, there is no release date for it, but it’s expected to hit PC and current-gen consoles early next year.

Before this announcement, it was rumored that Bloober Team was doing a remake of Silent Hill 2, but the developer didn’t comment on whether this was true or not. These speculations came at a time when there was strong belief, along with some leaked content, that Konami’s dormant horror franchise was going to be making a comeback. At the time of writing, there’s still no official word on whether a new Silent Hill game, or even a remaster, is in the works.

As a horror game that messes with players’ minds, the original Layers of Fear stood out in the indie horror scene. With its themes of insanity, alcoholism, and art, it was an interesting narrative about obsession and a descent into depression. Some have criticized Bloober for its depiction of mental illness, especially in The Medium, so it will be interesting to see where the team goes with this upcoming title.

Layers of Fears is currently in development for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and due out in early 2023.
