It was a busy year for Koei Tecmo, as the Japanese publisher and many of its developers released major games. Between the launch of Gust’s Blue Reflection: Second Light in November and a remaster of 2014’s Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water coming to modern consoles in October, many of Koei Tecmo’s biggest names got their time in the spotlight this year. Now, Koei Tecmo has made it clear the developer has set even higher expectations for itself moving into 2022.
Koei Tecmo came out swinging early in 2021 with two major games releasing very early in the year as Team Ninja’s Nioh 2 and Omega Force’s Persona 5 Strikers both debuted in February, with Strikers recently being confirmed for PS Plus for the first month of 2022. Koei Tecmo’s games were peppered throughout the year with the popular Atelier series of RPGs receiving both a new main-series entry and a compilation and Samurai Warriors debuting its fifth main-series game. Now, a recent interview from Koei Tecmo’s staff hints at even more major projects from the massive publisher coming in the next year.
A recent interview with Japanese website 4gamer featured interviews with several different members of Koei Tecmo’s staff with general manager Yosuke Hayashi claiming that next year’s releases will show the “full power” of the studio. The article included interviews with several of Koei Tecmo’s subsidiaries with Team Ninja brand director Fumihiko Yasuda teasing an action game based on China’s Three Kingdoms period of history and Fatal Frame producer Yosuke Kikushi discussing his team taken on a challenge that would be completely new to him and his team.
Koei Tecmo has already revealed several major projects from many of the Yokohama-based publisher’s many studios. Dynasty Warrios 9: Empires, the newest spinoff to one of Koei Tecmo’s flagship franchises, was confirmed for a February 2022 release date earlier this year and Atelier Sophie was announced to be receiving a sequel later that same month. Koei Tecmo already. Another Fatal Frame producer, Keisuke Kikuchi, has also expressed his desire to make a new game in the popular horror franchise.
Koei Tecmo’s recent release of Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX capped off a year full of major releases for the Japanese publisher as it looks to move into 2022. While Koei Tecmo did not receive any major accolades for its 2021 games, the developer has several big games already in production with February looking to be a big month for the developer between the previously-mentioned Dynasty Warriors and Atelier Sophie, as well as the highly-anticipated release of Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. Koei Tecmo claimed 2022 would show the studio’s “full power” and the publisher’s lineup for the new year already looks impressive.
