Invincible Creator Hints At Some Familiar Faces That Could Join Season 3

Highlights

  • Invincible season 3 will feature more well-known actors from The Walking Dead, expanding the cast of the show even further.
  • Several members of The Walking Dead alumni have already appeared in Invincible, showcasing showrunner Robert Kirkman’s familiarity with the actors.
  • There is speculation about which other actors from The Walking Dead could potentially join Invincible, including Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal, Norman Reedus, Michael Rooker, and Danai Gurira.

With Invincible season 2 on the way, showrunner Robert Kirkman revealed that with the progress made in season 3, more well-known actors from Kirkman’s previously adapted graphic novel, The Walking Dead, could appear sometime down the line.

Kirkman did not name names but mentioned that multiple The Walking Dead alumni could be featured in Invincible season 3. He also said that the cast will only continue to expand in the third season.

At New York Comic Con 2023 (via Screen Rant), Kirkman revealed the news while talking about how far along they are with completing Invincible season 3. “Finishing touches on the last few bits of season 2 are being done right now. Season 3 is very far along… When I talk about the actors that we have for season 2, it is a minefield. There’s so many in season 3 that we have to talk about,” Kirkman said. “If you think the cast expanded for season 2, just wait until you hear about who we’re getting in the show in season 3. That might give you an indication as to how far we’re going. There’s just so much big stuff planned… It’s possible that there may be some more Walking Dead alums that may be popping into Invincible at some point.”

Multiple The Walking Dead alumni have already been featured in Invincible. Steven Yeun, who played Glenn Rhee, voices the titular character Invincible/Mark Grayson. The other alumni who have been featured thus far in the show voiced the original Guardians of the Globe, which include Lauren Cohan (War Woman), Lennie James (Darkwing), Ross Marquand (The Immortal plus others), Michael Cudlitz (Red Rush), Sonequa Martin-Green (Green Ghost), Khary Payton (Black Samson) and Chad L. Coleman (Martian Man). Even if some of them aren’t the biggest Hollywood names, they are actors whom Kirkman is familiar with.

That leaves the question of who else from The Walking Dead will be featured in Invincible. Those who voiced the original Guardians were among the longest-running characters on the show, but they weren’t the main characters. Don’t be surprised if they get some bigger players like Andrew Lincoln, who played Rick Grimes, or Jon Bernthal, who played Shane Walsh and has been featured in superhero media before, having played The Punisher. Or they could turn to Norman Reedus, who played fan-favorite Daryl Dixon throughout The Walking Dead‘s run. Or, if they want more alumni from the show who have superhero media experience, why not go with Michael Rooker, who played both Merle Dixon and Yondu? Or Danai Gurira, who played Michonne and Okoye?

Some of The Walking Dead alumni have been involved in alternative superhero media, like Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who is slated to play a role in The Boys season 4. Laurie Holden played Crimson Countess in The Boys season 3, so it’s clear their alumni have plenty of experience playing superheroes. It’s a matter of who gets to play who in Invincible and how well will they fit into the roles.

Invincible season 2 will premiere on November 3, 2023.
