The Gothic remake was treated to a new trailer that essentially serves as a detailed tour of the Old Camp, one of the most iconic locations from the original game. The promo arrived nearly a year after the last Gothic remake trailer revealed some rather creepy gameplay.
Originally announced in early 2020, the remake of Piranha Bytes’ cult classic 2001 RPG is still without a release date. Nevertheless, the project appears to be progressing at a steady pace, as THQ Nordic continues to share glimpses of the game on a biannual basis. The last such promo arrived several days back in the form of a screenshot teasing the Old Camp’s new look in the Gothic remake.
It turns out that the image from the promo was taken from an extensive tour of the Old Camp which the Austrian publisher shared as part of the 2023 THQ Nordic Showcase. With a runtime of over two minutes, the video has enough time to go over a significant portion of the camp’s outer ring, including its main gate and the arena in the northeast. The fighting pit looks much grander than it did in the original game, but the rest of the location depicted in the trailer appears to be a faithful recreation of the Old Camp from Gothic.
Although the trailer was rendered entirely in-engine, it doesn’t show any actual gameplay footage. The Gothic remake did receive a playable teaser in late 2019, but that prototype’s gameplay isn’t likely to be representative of the upcoming game because many fans criticized it for not being faithful to the original’s combat system, prompting Alkimia Interactive to return to the drawing board.
Gothic’s combat is unique because the game puts players in the shoes of a character who can barely swing a stick or do anything else, which makes the early hours of the RPG extremely punishing. However, as the player earns learning points through leveling and hires experts to train them, they gradually become better at using their target weapon class. Apart from learning new attacks and combos, training also rewards the protagonist with faster swinging animations, which was a unique mechanic that was only ever replicated in a single non-Gothic game, Warhorse Studios’ 2018 RPG Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
The newly shared trailer did not reveal any kind of information about when the Gothic remake will become available. That continued lack of a release window indicates that the game is still nowhere near going gold, thus being unlikely to hit the market before 2025, at the earliest. In the meantime, Nintendo Switch owners will get to play an enhanced version of the original Gothic starting this September.
The Gothic remake is currently in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
