George R. R. Martin Praises Elden Ring and Discusses Involvement

Fantasy author George R. R. Martin reflects upon his collaboration with Miyazaki and FromSoftware for Elden Ring, as well as his gaming interests.

Elden Ring is set to be one of FromSoftware’s biggest releases when it launches at the end of February. Elden Ring spoilers have struck the web and the game itself has secured 8 awards months before it has even released, with a lot of excitement from fans persisting since Elden Ring‘s official reveal.

George R. R. Martin’s involvement in Elden Ring was not only mentioned alongside its official announcement, but was a chief selling point for Elden Ring‘s early promotional marketing. Martin is the famous author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, which is known more widely as the popular TV series Game of Thrones, and as such his involvement in Elden Ring excited fans of his fantasy novels. Today, Martin has reminisced upon his contribution to FromSoftware’s latest action-RPG.

George R. R. Martin spoke recently in a brief blog post about his involvement in FromSoftware’s Elden Ring and how that collaboration came to be. Martin has spoke on his contributions at length beforehand, but this recollection takes a nostalgic look back on his experience and the inspiration that convinced him to take on the project. Martin cites FromSoftware and Hidetaka Miyazaki’s “groundbreaking” and “gorgeous” art and, now that further demonstrations and trailers have aired, Martin believes Elden Ring “looks incredible.”

Martin admits that he never had a significant aptitude toward gaming aside from strategy games such as Railroad Tycoon and Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Martin addresses the fact that the gaming industry is just as big if not bigger than the film industry, sharing his admiration for the process it takes to create and develop a game such as Elden Ring. Rather, Martin was only tasked with offering “a bit of worldbuilding” for a “deep, dark, resonant world,” an area of talent with which Martin has had years of knowledge and expertise.

If Elden Ring was to become its own dark fantasy franchise à la Dark Souls, it is unknown if Martin’s input would be called upon for subsequent Elden Ring sequels. Perhaps Martin has already written enough of Elden Ring‘s rich history and environmental lore to sustain a number of sequels, as is the token expectation of modern fantasy franchises. Regardless, even if Elden Ring is intended to be a standalone title with the famous author’s contributions singularly focused on the one game, fans can be excited to see how Martin has established Elden Ring‘s world in the new year.

Elden Ring launches February 25, 2022, for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
