One Diablo 4 player found themselves unexpectedly falling victim to an attack thanks to the game’s seemingly oversized hitboxes, sharing a clip of the frustrating encounter online and soliciting feedback from other gamers. Unfortunately for this unlucky player, there was no mention of adjusting the size of hitboxes included in the recently revealed patch notes for Diablo 4’s Update 1.1.2, which is set to release on August 15.

Released in June following years of anticipation from franchise fans, Blizzard’s Diablo 4 has received a mixed response from players since its launch. While the game’s art style has been widely praised as a return to form for the series, complaints about everything from what some see as overly grindy player progression to rampant cheating in the online-only game have soured some players’ opinions of the title. Although steps have been taken to address the latter issue, with Blizzard banning thousands of Diablo 4 players in recent weeks for using cheats or exploits, players’ frustration over other issues with the long-awaited sequel persists.

Providing an example of the sorts of in-game issues raising players’ ire since launch, a clip posted to r/diablo4 highlights a possible problem with hitboxes in Diablo 4. Shared by Redditor r_pawspuppy22, the clip shows their character battling Diablo 4 boss Elias before being unexpectedly eliminated by a flame attack despite standing behind the cast. The clip then repeats in slow motion, zooming in on the action to show that their character was clearly behind Elias when the fallen Horadrim unleashed his forward-facing attack. Feeling that the incident shows that hitboxes in the game are too large, r_pawspuppy22 asked the Reddit community for their thoughts on the matter.

Many Redditors responding to the clip disagreed with the initial assessment that the problem in this instance was the size of the hitboxes in Diablo 4. Instead, several responses pointed out that Elias’ attack shoots a small blast of fire behind him even though the main thrust of the blast moves forward. Other Redditors placed the blame on what they claimed was an inaccurate telegraphing animation ahead of Elias’ attack that makes it difficult to dodge. Not everyone agreed with this take, though, with some replies arguing that the tongue of fire at Elias’ backside shouldn’t damage players unless character hitboxes are simply too large.

Whether resulting from oversized hitboxes or a poorly designed attack animation, this unexpected death shows that there are still issues yet to be fixed in Diablo 4. At least frustrated gamers now have the option of hopping into a new single-player mode in Diablo 3 while they wait for the next round of patches for its sequel.
