Free PS5 Upgrade Now Available for Final Fantasy 7 Remake PS Plus Version

Those who downloaded Final Fantasy 7 Remake through PS Plus earlier this year can finally upgrade their PS4 version to the PS5 version starting today.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake dropped as a PS Plus PS4 title earlier this year, giving many players who may have missed out in 2020 an opportunity to try it out. However, these players were unable to upgrade their copy to the PS5 version until today, finally letting them experience the definitive version of the Final Fantasy 7 reimagining.

Many were displeased when Square Enix announced that PS Plus players were exempt from the PS5 upgrade of Final Fantasy 7 Remake. The announcement was tied with the unveiling of the game’s DLC, Episode InterMISSION, a campaign starring Yuffie Kisaragi that was exclusive to just PS5 players, further frustrating those who have been unable attain the new system. Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PS5 boasts many improvements from the PS4 including higher quality textures, multiple resolution and performance options, and significantly improved load times. The PS Plus version of the game was really only beneficial for those on PS4, but even then it had its problems.

The wait is over, as players who downloaded the PS Plus version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake can now upgrade to the PS5 version for free. Square Enix announced the reversal of Final Fantasy 7 Remake‘s upgrade path earlier this week, noting that players who redeemed the game for PS4 back in March will be able to upgrade it today. Previously, only those who fully owned Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PS4 either physically or digitally were eligible for the free upgrade. Episode InterMISSION has also been discounted by 25% for a limited time as well, though Square Enix has made no mention of the DLC becoming available on PS4.

Downloading the upgrade can be a difficult process if players don’t know where to look. The easiest way is to start by navigating to the player’s PS Plus game library, and scrolling down until they find Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Next, they will want to click on the elipsis, followed by “View Product Page,” which will redirect them to the PlayStation Store listing of the game. Finally, players will want to hit the elipsis one more time, navigate to the “Select Version” prompt, and select the caption “Final Fantasy 7 Remake upgrade for PS4 version owners.”

Although it took some time for it to come around, Square Enix and PlayStation made the right call in making the PS Plus version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake upgradable. In the short term, making the upgrade accessible from the start would have discouraged players from buying the full release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, as well as make those who had already purchased the game feel like they got shorthanded. Now that a lot of time has passed, Square Enix can renew interest in the game for those who were sitting on their PS4 PS Plus version, and potentially get them into the DLC too. When everyone plays, everyone wins.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is available on PC, PS4, and PS5.
