Highlights

  • Recently, an official post was shared to celebrate Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles’ 20th anniversary.
  • In it, the producer of the original Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles expressed his desire to create a new entry in the series, but says he hasn’t had the time to do so.
  • The art director also shared a new illustration of the game’s characters, stating that it felt like reuniting with old friends.

The producer behind the original Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles has expressed his desire to create a new entry in the Square Enix spin-off series. The original game was released in the early-2000s for the Nintendo GameCube, and it saw players adventure through a unique action RPG that also promote co-operative play. This Final Fantasy spin-off would then receive new entries throughout the years, mostly releasing on Nintendo consoles like the DS and Wii. The last new game in this subseries would be Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers, which released in 2009 for the Wii.

Almost fifteen years after its release on the GameCube, the original Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles would get remastered for Nintendo Switch and PS4, along with a free-to-play version on mobile devices that released in 2020. It introduced polished graphics, re-recorded voice acting, and new elements like cross-play and online multiplayer. Three years after the remaster’s launch, the producer of the game reflected on the series on its twentieth anniversary.

This was posted on the official Final Fantasy website, where series producer Akitoshi Kawazu and series art director Toshiyuki Itahana celebrated the occassion with some messages to the fans. Kazwazu started off by voicing his personal regrets for not providing a new Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles game, stating that he doesn’t have the time to do the things he’d like to with the series. He believes the cast of the spin-off series deserves another chance to shine, but has been unable to provide a new adventure with them. He concludes his message with the hope that he’ll be able to create a new adventure with them one day.

Art director Itahana shared a brand-new illustration of various characters from Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, where they are all walking on a beach while enjoying the summer season. He notes that many of the characters he drew were ones that he hadn’t drawn in such a long time, so it felt like reuniting with old friends when he was creating the illustration.

The most recent entry in this spin-off series is the aforementioned remaster. The remastered version of Crystal Chronicles saw mixed to average reviews on consoles, and while the game did receive some extra polish, it wasn’t enough. Many fans took issues with the remaster’s new online multiplayer introducing problems that weren’t present in the original. The lack of a local co-op option for the remastered version didn’t do it many favors, either. Hopefully, Square Enix can give the spin-off series another chance with a brand-new game in the future.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition is available now on PS4, Switch and Mobile Devices.
