Square Enix has just revealed the Viper, a new melee damage dealing job for Dawntrail, the upcoming Final Fantasy 14 expansion pack. Coming off the peak of Endwalker, fans already have high expectations for Dawntrail, as the Void narrative in Final Fantasy 14 has officially concluded with Patch 6.5, and the developers have begun to set the stage for the next big story arc. Talk of female Hrothgar and Green Mages is constant all across the Final Fantasy 14 community, but the new information presented at Fanfest has revealed just how wide of a scope Square Enix has for Dawntrail.

As revealed by Dawntrail‘s announcement trailer, the upcoming Final Fantasy 14 expansion takes players to Tural, the New World – the homeland of the Mamool Ja, and the birthplace of blue magic. While it’s speculated that Krile will pick up the rumored Green Mage job based on her last scene in Endwalker, the Warrior of Light’s job remained a mystery up until now. Many players assumed they’d be brandishing a handgun to pair with the sword for a Corsair class, but the developers at Square Enix found their inspiration elsewhere.

The Viper will be using a twinblade as their weapon of choice, in a combat style reminiscent of Zidane from Final Fantasy 9. The animations for the new Final Fantasy 14 job are suitably flashy, and they seem to evoke a more martial-based ability kit compared to the semi-magical Ninja – the Viper’s fellow Scouting job. Final Fantasy 14 producer Naoki Yoshida described the class as having frequent opportunities to execute various abilities in between weapon skills, suggesting a big focus on an oGCD rotation.

In addition to the Viper, Dawntrail will also debut two yet unannounced classes to Final Fantasy 14, with one of them being a Limited job similarly to the Blue Mage that was introduced with Stormblood. Some fans speculate that Beastmaster will be the obvious pick for the new Limited job, complete with a Bestiary to parallel the Spellbook that Blue Mage players can fill up. As far as group content goes, Dawntrail‘s Alliance Raid series was revealed to be the Echoes of Vana’diel, directly inspired by Final Fantasy 11.

Final Fantasy 16 fans can also expect to see a cross-over between the two games, as Final Fantasy 14 players will be able to unlock Torgal from Final Fantasy 16 as a mount and minion through a brand-new collaborative event. While much of Dawntrail still remains a mystery, players can expect to see more about the next Final Fantasy expansion during the Fanfest in Japan on January 7th, 2024.

Final Fantasy 14 is currently available on PC, PS4, and PS5. An Xbox version is in development.
