Bethesda games are famous for their massive and lively modding community. Skyrim is possibly one of the most heavily modded games available, and Fallout: New Vegas can’t be far behind. Fallout 4 may not have as wide of a mod catalog as its older siblings, but it’s still home to a wide range of fantastic and highly immersive mods.
Fallout 4’s Sim Settlements mods are among the more unique fan projects, overhauling the game’s settlement mechanics. Now, fans can download the latest DLC-sized installment, Sim Settlements 2 – Chapter 2, which introduces an array of new Settlement-related quests and mechanics.
As the name implies, Sim Settlements 2 – Chapter 2 continues the questline introduced in the main Sim Settlements 2 Mod. It also gives Fallout 4 two new joinable factions and three new series of side quests. It also introduces multiple new mechanics such as diseases, a faction headquarters, and more. This is in addition to new objects, buildings, and features for the existing Sim Settlements town-building system, such as facilities dedicated to the settlers’ health and hygiene.
The new main quest revolves around continuing to rebuild Fallout 4’s Commonwealth and finally putting an end to Fallout 4’s Gunners. While they are supposedly a ruthless mercenary army, they’re little more than upgraded Raiders in vanilla Fallout 4. The game also feels like it’s missing a final confrontation with the renegade mercenaries. Sim Settlements 2 – Chapter 2 fixes that problem and fleshes out the Fallout 4 faction in a way that makes them feel like a genuine threat instead of a mere annoyance. Meanwhile, the new side quests include helping to establish an official police force, stop the spread of a new epidemic, and bring down a dangerous criminal syndicate.
For those unfamiliar with the mod series, Sim Settlements began as an effort to address one of the main criticisms of Fallout 4’s settlement system. Usually, it’s entirely the players’ responsibility to provide food, housing, and jobs for everyone, building every individual house all by themselves. The original mod automated the process to varying degrees, even allowing players to delegate town management to a chosen NPC. Sim Settlements 2 overhauled the system even further and introduced a new settlement-related questline with professional-quality voice acting.
One of the most interesting new features is that Sim Settlements 2 – Chapter 2 finally lets players begin the process of genuinely rebuilding the Commonwealth. If player-constructed settlements have a large enough surplus of resources, people will start moving into pre-war ruins like Concord. Eventually, they’ll build up into functioning towns, complete with their own defenses, shopkeepers, and quest givers.
