Epic Games Store’s free mystery game promotion is underway, giving users a total of fifteen free games this year. Up first was Shenmue 3 and it was followed by Neon Abyss. Both games had mixed reviews, but there is definitely a cult following for the Shenmue franchise. If someone has been putting it off, there’s not a better time to check it out. Neon Abyss is a roguelike action platformer, a perfect game to check out for those new to the roguelike genre.
Now, though, players can snag the third free game from the Epic Games Store. It is available now and will be so through December 19 at 10 am CT. In a different direction than the colorful apocalypse of Neon Abyss, Remnant: From The Ashes is the third mystery game from EGS.
On Opencritic, Remnant: From The Ashes has a strong rating and a 78 Top Critic Average. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where an interdimensional entity known as the Root has devastated humanity, and players take off for an island that appears to be the epicenter. Remnant: From The Ashes has often been compared to the Souls series, often with the remark that it was “Dark Souls With Guns.” Some argue that the comparison is thin, but at the very least, it’s worth checking out for fans of the genre.
Plus, if they do enjoy it, there are two major DLCs available for Remnant: From The Ashes. The first is Swamps of Corsus, which adds a rogue-like survival mode, new bosses, enemies, weapons, and area for the campaign. The second DLC, titled Subject 2923, dives deep into Remnant: From the Ashes lore with a focus on the origins of the campaign’s Dreamers. Those who do decide to run the full gamut with Remnant may also want to check out Chronos: Before The Ashes, a prequel to the events of Remnant. It didn’t review as well, but it’s a decent Soulslike title that may scratch that particular itch all the same.
All things considered, it’s a strong addition to the Epic Games Store line-up for this mystery game promo. Users will want to make sure they claim it by 10 am CT on December 19, at which time the fourth mystery game will become available. It remains to be seen exactly what that is, but hopefully, it continues this upward holiday stride for the Epic Games Store.
Epic Games Store users get a handful of free games every month.
