Elden Ring Player Recreates Thor From God Of War Ragnarok

An Elden Ring player creates an incredibly accurate version of God of War Ragnarok’s Thor which made waves when it was first shown last year.

Inspired by Santa Monica Studio’s recent release, an Elden Ring player crafted a compelling iteration of God of War Ragnarok‘s Thor. The versatile character creator and diverse armor sets found within Elden Ring have prompted thousands of players to create Tarnished derived from the celebrities of real life to famous figures of other franchises.

When Thor’s design was first revealed to the wider gaming community in September of last year, the moment sparked intense discourse between fans and detractors. Raf Grassetti, Studio Art Director for the God of War developer, opened the floodgates with an image of the Norse deity posted to Twitter. It was met with collective surprise; online consciousness had been inundated by the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s interpretation of Thor, played for over a decade by Chris Hemsworth. Santa Monica Studio’s Thor is burly and boasts a belly similar to that which was ostensibly used as a punchline in Avengers: Endgame. Director Eric Williams has stated that the deviation was very much intentional, and claimed the team attempted to lean closer into the associated mythology.

Since then, Elden Ring has been released to critical acclaim and the open-world role-playing game’s character creator is one indication as to why. In traditional FromSoftware style, albeit not for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the means for constructing a playable entity is included, fully equipped with all the sliders one might need to make their imagination manifest. Images posted to Reddit by kryytatoes showcase God of War Ragnarok‘s version of Thor, seemingly having just bested Maliketh, the Black Blade.

The first image captures Thor from the waist up, idly waiting around for someone to batter with his Battle Hammer, the Elden Ring weapon acting as an alternative to Mjolnir. Wearing the Kaiden Armor, the aesthetic rather accurately embodies Thor’s build, enhanced by the player’s hair and face. A second image catches the Lightning Strike Ash of War in the middle of its animation, providing an apt method of imbuing the Battle Hammer with lightning.

Of course, Elden Ring has its limitations, but unless the costume design for God of War Ragnarok‘s Thor is replicated by modders, this is likely one of the best iterations Tarnished will witness for some time. It is a shame that the Dragonscale Blade’s skill is unique to the katana, as the Ice Lightning Sword would have been the perfect Ash of War for Thor in Elden Ring.

Elden Ring is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
