Elden Ring Glitch Makes Malenia Fight Unfair

A glitch in Elden Ring makes the already difficult fight against Malenia completely impossible and leaves the player unable to do anything.

FromSoftware’s Elden Ring, though not considered to be the most difficult “Souls” game, has various extremely difficult boss fights, not the least of which is Malenia, Blade of Miquella. One of the many optional boss encounters in Elden Ring, Malenia is an unforgiving opponent that should not be undertaken unless the player is fully prepared.

Malenia’s boss fight is located near the Haligtree Roots Site of Lost Grace and consists of two phases, the second of which allows her to inflict Scarlet Rot on the player, which is a status effect that deals damage over time. There are many different strategies available to the player to overcome Malenia, but none of them are helpful when a glitch makes the encounter impossible to complete.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Redditor Isaac_Firewalker posts a video that begins with the player entering the second phase of the boss fight with Malenia, only to encounter a glitch that causes the boss’s attack to glitch all the way to the player’s position and instantly kill them. Malenia is a difficult enough boss without this glitch, turning her into basically an unavoidable homing missile that is capable of one-shotting the player character.

The attack that Malenia does in this video is known as Scarlet Aeonia in which she dives onto the player and summons a giant flower that explodes into a cloud of Scarlet Rot. This is always the first attack that Malenia does upon entering her second phase and should be predictable and easily avoided. However, the glitch causes her to move right to the player instead of diving straight down as she usually does.

There are a plethora of things in the world of Elden Ring that can kill the player character at any given moment, just like any other Soulsborne game. It is, however, disappointing to be halfway through a difficult boss fight, probably having already tried the fight multiple times, only to be killed by a glitch.

Though it can be disheartening to be killed in a major boss fight by a surprise glitch, getting to phase two in the Malenia fight is an achievement of its own. With a little perseverance, even Malenia, Blade of Miquella, can be conquered, as long as the player merely has to contend with her and not also with the unintended second boss in the encounter — the glitches of Elden Ring.

Elden Ring is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
