Elden Ring Director Hidetaka Miyazaki Reveals His Favorite FromSoftware Boss

Weeks before the release of the highly anticipated Elden Ring, Director Hidetaka Miyazaki reveals his proudest FromSoftware boss.

The FromSoftware Souls-like games have a massive following, and the upcoming Elden Ring is one of the most highly anticipted games of the year. Fans are looking forward to another addition to the FromSoftware Souls-like library, which comes with challenging difficulty and satisfying progression. However, the art style, world-building, music, and boss design are also big parts of why the games are so beloved. Now, director Hidetaka Miyazaki has chimed in to reveal who his favorite boss is.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The creepy character design and horrifying bosses can be found all throughout the timeline of the Souls-like games. Fans have their favorites, and Elden Ring looks to add more memorable bosses to the mix. With that in mind, it is exciting to learn the favorite of Miyazaki himself.

PlayStation Blog recently interviewed multiple game developers to ask who the best FromSoftware boss is. Hidetaka Miyazaki was the first asked, and his favorite is Old Monk from the original Demon’s Souls. The Old Monk is unique from almost any other boss in the games, and this is why Miyazaki is so proud of it. He says that there was a lot of pushback in terms of the design of Old Monk. It is something Miyazaki really wanted to do form a visual and gameplay perspective, but others did not believe it was possible. However, the team pulled it off, and Old Monk became one of the most memorable bosses from any FromSoftware game.

With Demon’s Souls, there were a lot of mechanics throughout the development that were difficult to design. For instance, the asynchronous online features were complicated, but I think the Old Monk encompasses those tribulations and how we pushed through and made something we were proud of.

The Old Monk is a popular boss, but there are others that are memorable as well. Dancer of the Boreal Valley from Dark Souls 3 is the favorite of BluePoint producer Randall Lowe. Owl from Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is Israel Rey’s favorite, another developer from BluePoint who worked on the Demon’s Souls remake. Nameless King from Dark Souls 3 is a treasured boss of many, including Bend Studio’s Tucker Cole. Ludwig the Holy Blade, Knight Artorias, Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower, and Guardian Ape were also mentioned by the developers as favorites, among others. It’s intriguing to see how the FromSoftware games have influenced others in the industry.

Elden Ring has high expectations to live up to. The game has been in development for a long time, especially considering the delays, but now there are just three weeks to go until it debuts. Soon, players will be able to find out if this new world has fresh “favorites” to add to their FromSoftware boss lists.

Elden Ring releases February 25, 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
