As the dust settles on Bungie’s newly released Lightfall for Destiny 2, players have come to realize that the DLC’s significant difficulty increase has made many weapons feel entirely useless in higher-end content. Granted, the bump up in difficulty was telegraphed well ahead of time, but it may not have had the sort of effect that Bungie was likely aiming for.
Days ahead of Lightfall‘s release, a portion of the player base blamed a famous Destiny 2 streamer for the upcoming difficulty increase, fearing that it would make the game unplayable in some respects. Citing “elitist” takes from prominent members of the community, players voiced their concerns while still making it clear that they’d need to wait and see how the changes panned out.
As it turns out, Destiny 2 may have cranked the difficulty a bit too high in some respects with the launch of the Lightfall DLC. After days of getting used to the new difficulty curve, a significant number of community members have come to an agreement that the baseline primary ammo Legendary weapons (auto rifles, pulse rifles, SMGs, etc.) feel “awful” due to being exceedingly weak in relevant content. As it currently stands, Neomuna’s difficulty curve makes it so that even the weakest enemies can take a full magazine’s worth of ammo from an auto rifle before dying, which makes such weapons effectively useless.
The game’s biggest subreddit has been vocal about Destiny 2: Lightfall‘s many problems, but the fact that Legendary primary ammo weapons are having such a hard time keeping up is particularly egregious. Exotic primary ammo weapons, at least, enjoy a hefty 40% damage buff against regular red health enemies, which helps them out in endgame-tier content. Legendaries, on the other hand, have no such boon, and they have seemingly been left in the dust for the time being.
Most fans agree that Destiny 2: Lightfall has dropped the ball in many ways. Those who wish to compete at the intended difficulty setting, as shown on Neomuna itself, will need to rely purely on abilities, maintain a constant damage buff of some sort, or simply forego primary ammo weaponry and equip a double special ammo loadout instead. Each of the available options includes avoiding primaries, the issue of which is rather self-explanatory.
Even though Lightfall is rumored to have been Destiny 2 filler DLC, players are hoping that Bungie alleviates the mechanical problems that are present in the game’s current sandbox. The developer, however, hasn’t acknowledged the community’s concerns at this time, and any potential sandbox tweaks won’t be coming out anytime soon.
Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
