It’s confirmed: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 players must open Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 first to play the sequel, forcing gamers into a time-consuming process. The problem comes from Activision’s desire to make Modern Warfare 2 a hub for all things Call of Duty, with Modern Warfare 3 being the first to be placed under it.
Many Call of Duty fans found Modern Warfare 3 early release wanting at best. Various problems plagued the game almost immediately, ranging from getting full-screen ads to its PS5 version getting a Disc Required error and having a disappointing single-player campaign. While these problems are already major causes for concern, there is one problem that Modern Warfare 3 has that wasn’t caused by its development. Instead, it was due to Activision’s way of consolidating everything Call of Duty under one app.
PC Gamer’s Morgan Park recently confirmed that Modern Warfare 3 PC players can’t launch the game without launching Modern Warfare 2 first. Park’s report included a video that shows the entire process step-by-step. To access Modern Warfare 3‘s campaign, players must do the following:
- Open the Call of Duty HQ app and launch Modern Warfare 2
- Go to Modern Warfare 3‘s tab within Modern Warfare 2 and click on Campaign. Doing so will have Modern Warfare 2 display a prompt notifying the player that the game needs to restart to launch Modern Warfare 3‘s campaign
- Clicking on the prompt’s Proceed button will initiate the launch process. After some time, the application will return with Modern Warfare 3 loaded
How Much Time Do Gamers Spend Waiting To Play Modern Warfare 3?
Because of this process, Park stated that opening Modern Warfare 3 takes at least 70-90 seconds (1 minute and 10 seconds to one and a half minutes). This duration is based on his experience alone; it could be longer for gamers running Modern Warfare 3 on its recommended or minimum system requirements. This time-consuming process may be due to Activision’s decision to emulate its Call of Duty HQ launcher by consolidating everything Call of Duty under Modern Warfare 2. Unfortunately, Modern Warfare 3 is the first casualty of Activision’s decision.
The time-consuming process to access Modern Warfare 3 will become more than an annoyance for many Call of Duty fans as the game slowly becomes publicly available on November 10. Only time will tell if Activision will change or improve how PC players launch Modern Warfare 3, a game that requires 200GB of storage regardless of players’ gaming platform.
