Blue Beetle Star Teases When The DC Movie’s First Trailer Will Drop

Although its theatrical release is quickly approaching, DC’s Blue Beetle hasn’t been the subject of many updates. While a couple of posters have been released, a trailer has yet to come out. However, George Lopez promises the first Blue Beetle trailer is coming soon.

Written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and directed by Angel Manuel Soto, Blue Beetle will introduce Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle to the DCU. Originally, the DC movie was supposed to be a direct-to-streaming release, but its theatrical release was announced in December 2021. Blue Beetle stars Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, Bruna Marquezine as Jaime’s love interest Penny, Susan Sarandon as Victoria Kord, and George Lopez as Jaime’s uncle Rudy. What We Do In The Shadows star Harvey Guillén has also been cast in the movie, but his role has not been revealed. Very few plot details have been released, and without a trailer, it’s difficult to guess what the movie’s main conflict will be.

Fans may not have to wait much longer for a Blue Beetle trailer. Lopez took to his personal Instagram page to announce that a Blue Beetle trailer will be coming soon, promising fans will love it. Additionally, Big Screen Leaks tweeted that the Blue Beetle trailer will be released within the next month. While that tweet on its own wouldn’t be compelling, the fact that the tweet coincided with Lopez’s Instagram post could mean that a Blue Beetle trailer will drop by the end of April.

While much remains unknown about the on-screen portrayal of Blue Beetle, the character does have a long comic history. The Blue Beetle character was first introduced in 1939. At the time, the character who wore the Blue Beetle mantle was a police officer named Dan Garrett, who gained superpowers from a substance called Vitamin 2X. In 1964, Dan Garrett was reintroduced as an archeologist who got his powers from an Egyptian scarab. In 1966, the mantle was handed to Ted Kord, a student of Garrett’s who had no powers throughout his run as the Blue Beetle. When Jaime Reyes was introduced in 2006, much of the Blue Beetle’s lore was changed. Rather than his powers being mystical, Reyes’ powers were given an alien origin. The scarab that had previously been associated with Egyptian magic was retooled to be a piece of alien biotechnology that bonded with Reyes and encased him in a suit. In the comics, Reyes has ties with both the Teen Titans and the Justice League.

Assuming DC isn’t straying too far from Reyes’ established history as the Blue Beetle, the comics might be a good place to look for ideas as to what Blue Beetle will cover. The movie’s synopsis makes it clear that Blue Beetle will be an origin story for Reyes – beyond that, the possibilities are endless. With the recasting of Superman and Batman on the horizon and the general overhaul of the DCU, it’s possible that Blue Beetle could be in line to join the DCU’s Justice League, just as his comic counterpart has in the past. It’s also possible that Blue Beetle will meet the same fate as characters like Batgirl and Black Adam, whose presence in the DCEU was either short-lived or cut entirely. Blue Beetle’s future will surely become more clear once the first trailer drops.

Blue Beetle premieres in theaters on August 18th, 2023.
