Bill Hader Has A Good Reason Why Barry Is Ending In Season 4

Following a dark third season, it was confirmed last year that Barry season 4 would be the show’s last. With the show’s final season about to start airing its final episodes, showrunner and lead actor Bill Hader finally explained why the show is ending the story.

Despite all the twists and turns that happened in HBO’s Barry season 3 that changed pretty much every character in the show for the worse, more or less, Hader believes that there was more journey to explore with the characters. At the same time, he didn’t want to add more unnecessary stories to them than he had to, which is why the show will end in Barry season 4.

In an interview with Variety, Hader said that many asked why Barry was continuing, to which Hader responded by saying there was more to cover. “It was very much in the writing and the storytelling. I mean, a lot of people after last season were like, ‘Why are you doing another season? It should have just ended.’ But to me, there are still so many questions with the other characters, and with Barry — and there’s so many things unsaid. What happens in season 4 is structurally radical in some ways, but it made sense for what I think the characters needed to go through, and what I think the whole show is always kind of headed towards.” Hader added that while Barry has more to cover, for it to progress naturally, it has to end with season 4. “You realize, well, we could pad a lot of stuff, and just make story. But if we’re going forward, it ends in season 4.”

Season 4 will resume many hanging plot threads from all that transpired in Barry season 3. Primarily they will start with Barry living out his new life behind bars, who may or may not get re-acquainted with his old handler, Fuches, who tried his absolute hardest to get Barry killed after Barry cut ties with him. The show will also deal with the fallout of Sally losing her once-promising career in Hollywood and the trauma she suffered from having to kill one of the assailants who tried to murder Barry. The real mystery is where they go with Gene Cousineau, who ratted Barry out, and NoHo Hank, whose drug operation is now gone.

Barry gradually got darker and darker from season 1 onward. While fans may have been shocked that things got as bleak as they did in Barry season 3, they must remember that this was a show about a man trying to hide his double life as an assassin. Not only that, but it was clear that his other life would eventually interfere with the one he wanted, and when it did, there was no telling what lengths the criminal underworld would go to harm Barry.

That all builds up to one question – what now? Even though Barry Berkman wants that happy ending, he’s done enough damage that he may not deserve one. He wasn’t happy with his work, but his choices led to getting him imprisoned, among other repercussions. Fans didn’t see this all coming, but it’s not like Barry was a predictable show. As shocking as Barry season 3 was, there’s no telling what will happen next.

Barry season 4 will begin airing on April 16, 2023.
