Analyst Predicts Next-Gen Switch Coming in 2024

An industry analyst’s forecast claims Nintendo will release its next console in 2024, which could be bad news for the rumored Switch Pro upgrade.

The Nintendo Switch has been on the market for close to five years now. By this point, it’s not all that unusual for people to start looking towards what’s next as a console enters the latter half of its lifespan, as one analyst has done with their guess for when the Switch’s successor will finally arrive.

For all of the handheld/console hybrid’s remarkable success, it hasn’t been without a few noticeable drawbacks like tiny storage space and weaker specs. With these shortcomings becoming more apparent next to the advances brought by newer competitors like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, the demand is growing to see Nintendo release some sort of upgraded version of the Switch to keep it from falling further behind. The company sort of did that with the release of the Switch OLED model last year, but the relatively minor upgrade has had fans clamoring for either a proper mid-gen upgrade akin to the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X or a fully next-gen Switch.

Said next-gen console might only be a few years off, if industry analyst Piers Harding-Rolls is to be believed. GamesIndustry.biz recently spoke to a number of analysts to get their predictions for gaming in 2022 and beyond, and one of Harding-Rolls’ predictions was that a new Nintendo console will debut in 2024. He also touched upon the rumored Switch Pro model, adding that with Nintendo likely releasing a whole new console in just two years’ time, he’s not convinced the Switch’s mid-gen upgrade will happen at all.

Nintendo Switch Sold More Units in Japan Last Year Than All Other Consoles Combined

That’s probably not what fans impatient for a beefed-up Switch will want to hear, but then again, the lack of cutting-edge technology hasn’t stopped the Switch from selling well. With the ongoing pandemic impacting the availability of its next-gen competitors, the Switch line has been free to dominate the market in 2021. Harding-Rolls predicted that the Switch will remain the best selling family of consoles in 2022, even with a forecasted decline in sales to around 21 million units, and he cited the OLED model as a contributor to this ongoing success.

It also helps that this year’s Switch release schedule is already packed. Many of 2022’s biggest titles are coming to Nintendo’s console, including Pokemon Legends: Arceus, Triangle Strategy, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Bayonetta 3, Splatoon 3, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, and the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Add to that highly-anticipated games with unknown release windows like Metroid Prime 4 and Hollow Knight: Silksong, and fans have plenty to look forward to while they wait for Nintendo’s next big console.
