3D Pokemon GO Billboard Celebrates International Cat Day

In Japan, a unique Pokemon GO advertisement aims to make passerby commuters smile as it celebrates the many different cat Pokemon found in the game.

Across its many releases such as its video games, movies, and animated TV shows, Pokemon seems to always have something up its sleeve to surprise fans. One of the aspects of the franchise that tends to catch players off guard quite often is Pokemon GO, as the game always tries to change how fans play it as they go throughout their daily lives. In Japan, an animated billboard for the mobile game made commuters smile as cat pocket monsters took over a rather unique advertisement spot for International Cat Day.

International Cat Day falls on August 8. It was declared by the International Fund for Animal Welfare in 2002. While not many people may not know about the small holiday, it seems that the Japanese branch of Pokemon GO remembered it and decided to celebrate it in style.

In the Shinjuku ward of Tokyo, Japan, Pokemon GO took over a special TV screen advertisement spot on August 8 on top of a skyscraper. If visitors of Shinjuku looked up just in time, they’d catch a small animated commercial starring an array of different cat Pokemon. The cats featured ranged from the many different forms of Meowth, to other fan favorites like Litten and Skitty.

What makes this advertisement so unique is that it takes advantage of its height and placement on the top of a skyscraper to predict that its viewers will need to look up at it to see it. Keeping this in mind, it portrays a box on top of the building at a certain angle in order to give a slight 3D effect, making the critters look as if they’re in real life, threatening to pop out of the TV screen. Other games have used this specific area to advertise themselves as well, such as Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

It’s a rather bright and cheerful commercial that has plenty of humor and references for fans to find, such as Alolan Meowth pushing Kantonian Meowth out of the way, and how the Poke Stop behind the cat creatures constantly spits out Poke Balls. The ad is said to be showcased starting on International Cat Day all the way until September 5.

While this ad is only visible in a certain part of Japan, the international Pokemon GO social media pages have also shared a post of the entire commercial for fans to watch. Even still, Pokemon GO players can celebrate the occasion with all the cat critters in their own games without having to go abroad while Japan’s borders are still selective towards tourists.

Pokemon GO is available now on Android and iOS devices.
